An elderly man talks about what happened to him during the Spring of 1961.
When he was a young delivery driver, approaching the age of thirty, he picked up a hitch hiker at the side of the road to Coningsby, and the macabre events that followed were so strange and mysterious; he struggles to make sense of it even to this day.
But one thing is for certain. What happened in the Spring of 1961 on the road to Coningsby, changed him for the rest of his life.
The Road To Coningsby A Ghost Story eBook R F Whittaker
R F Whittaker knows how to make great short stories. While this story is a departure from his normal horror stories based on real crimes, it holds up well against the rest of his collection. It was realistic and disturbing. I can easily find myself in the narrator's shoes. I can see some people not liking the ending and at first, I thought it was a little strange. Then, I thought more about it and realized that perhaps it quite more "haunting" than the actual ghost in the story. Sorry for being vague, but you need to read it to find out what I'm talking about.Product details

The Road To Coningsby A Ghost Story eBook R F Whittaker Reviews
This is a good, classic ghost story. As always with Whittaker's work, it's got a good creep factor and great visuals.
An eerie tale of an elderly delivery man reliving the most traumatic experience of his life; an unforgettable event cloaked in mystery. A chance encounter with a young girl on a lonely country road turns into a horrific nightmare. A crime committed in the heat of the moment ends up haunting the man for the rest of his life.
This is a very well written short story told from the perspective of the main character; who is put into a situation that forces him to metaphorically confront some of his internal demons and moral values. It's vaguely reminiscent of the "woman in white" style urban legend, with a distinct twist & enough left to the imagination of the reader to make it an intriguing read. A story that really makes you think and may make you examine your own moral compass.
In this first person short story, an elderly man remembers and describes how his life was changed forever in only an instant. The tale is told by a woeful man harboring a dark secret that has haunted him for decades. The writing felt like it was a last testament of an old and feeble man who must tell his secret before he leaves this life; even if it is only to an anonymous stranger. Almost like a deathbed confession, the reader quickly learns of his life-changing accident on a lonely back road, and how one day of disaster loomed in his mind for the rest of his life. More than just a regret, this secret physically haunts the man until he has to learn more about what actually happened to him... And if the same thing had happened years before? He finally can explain his guilt and confess this bloody burden on the road Coningsby; a confession he could not dare to tell before, even his loving wife as she begins to fear for her husband's sanity.
This character, like many of Whittaker's complex antagonists, also becomes their own antagonist; his greatest fear and regret ultimately becoming his own worst enemy. Though some may consider the man's actions inexcusable, the reader cannot help but empathize with, or even just pity, this elderly man's life, and his macabre secret. A more tame selection of R F Whittaker's writings, I highly recommend this story to get you started in the dark world of Whittaker and his characters, before diving head first into his other works, full of imagery, gore, an the occasional bit of eroticism. ;)
